Sinter steps, also sinter terraces, are deposits of porous tufa or densely layered sinter in a stream or flowing water and, in contrast to stalactites, form relatively quickly. Larger sinter deposits are found, for example, in the area of the Croatian Plitvice Lakes or the Turkish Pamukkale. The bodies of water are created when blocks of calcium carbonate secreted in the area of a watercourse cross the direction of its flow. Splash water and changes in water temperature combined with obstacles at the bottom of the valley promote the formation of such calcareous tuff lakes.[1]
