Fifty years ago, over 15,000 cars passed through Röntgenplatz daily. The "Kreis 5 vor 12" working group launched the protest and, with persistence, achieved the permanent closure of the square in 1980, along with clever traffic control and comprehensive traffic calming measures throughout the entire inner Kreis 5. With innovative barriers and speed bumps, city councilor and later president of Fussverkehr Schweiz, Ruedi Aeschbacher (then known throughout Switzerland as "Schwellen-Ruedi"), ensured little and slow car traffic, even though the official speed limit was still 60 km/h.
