Zuidpolder
In recent years, the Zuidpolder in Barendrecht, approx. 170 ha in size, has been transformed from an agricultural area into a versatile nature and recreation area (110 ha).
On the east side, the Zuidpolder is bordered by Heerjansdam (Ziedewijdse dijk and Noldijk) and on the west by the Koedood. The Middeldijk is the border on the north side and the Achterzeedijk on the south side. A historic watercourse runs right through the polder which is called the Kleine Duiker in the east, in the middle part the water is called the Groote Duiker and in the west the Gaatkesplas, which is mentioned on old maps as Zuidpoldersche Boezem. This is now much wider than it was then.
Versatile recreation area
In the recreation area de Zuidpolder you can run, walk and cycle and discover nature, including via ramps that go over the water like a winding path. There is an assault course and the BarendBos for children and a birdwatching point. Dog owners also like to come to the Zuidpolder.
A large part has been set up as a grazing area for cattle. This zone is protected by waterways and fences. Visitors to the Zuidpolder can enter this area via cattle grids and swing gates.
Part is still in agricultural use. The recreation farm Kleine Duiker has 20 hectares in use and the De Ouden Dijck cemetery 7 hectares.
Final stage
The last phase, the northern part, will be constructed this year. There will be a cycle path over a dike, and a strolling and walking area.
