    "A garden was composed by our Japanese twin city Sapporo [for the IGA 1983] in which various elements from the aristocratic pond-island garden, the meditation garden and the garden for the tea ceremony are merged into one unit. This garden is essentially in style the Heian period (around 800 AD). " (Building Department Munich)
    The garden is still in a very good condition, even if the maples and pines that dominate the picture are apparently no longer vital.

      The Japanese Garden in Munich's West Park
      The Japanese Garden was created in Munich's West Park as part of the 1983 International Garden Exhibition, at the same time as the Chinese Garden, the Thai Temple and the Nepalese Pagoda. It is a mixture of Shinto style (lake stage and two wooden lanterns) with Zen style. The waiting shelter, walkway, tea house, waterfall and stone lanterns are in Zen style.

          The Japanese garden was a contribution to the exhibition by Munich's twin city of Sapporo. It is designed as a synopsis of various elements from the tradition of Japanese gardens as they were developed in the early Heian period around the year 800. Essential elements are a shallow pond with a terrace, a footbridge to a viewing platform and a stylized tea pavilion opposite. Rocks were placed around the pond, depicting a rugged landscape, in which some Japanese species of trees and some native pines were planted. The trees were not selected according to whether they occur in a traditional Japanese garden, but whether their growth habit can represent a principle corresponding to the Japanese garden in Munich. Individual objects imported from Japan, such as stone lanterns and basins, were placed in this landscape. The gardeners from Sapporo in the Munich area looked for the rocks all the way to Tyrol. Just very idyllic here, definitely enjoy it yourself 🤩👍
