Your visit is very important since it is the only one in the province of Almeria.
The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, in Oria, adopts a similar solution to the Velezano temple, although smaller and with a more simplified decoration.
The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a fairly late example of Baroque, since it was built in the second half of the 18th century.
This church is located in the center of a large urban space that surrounds it and constitutes a kind of atrium in which the doorway at the feet acts as a point of attraction for the façade. On this cover, the decoration of small reliefs that fills the spandrels contrasts with the sobriety of the pilasters, entablatures and pediments. This sobriety of decorative elements is broken by the plastic play achieved by the different materials used in the construction. The brick with shorter and wider dimensions than the one commonly used, gives the walls a special texture, underlined by the alternating caissons of plastered and whitewashed masonry. All this is linked to the Mudejar tradition, which, due to its economy, simplicity and beauty, survived for a long time in the province of Almería.
