I've been up this tower before...but the final climb to the top takes some getting used to. If you're not afraid of heights, you shouldn't attempt it.

If the visibility is good, you can see large parts of the Ore Mountains ridge, as well as the mountains of the upper Vogtland. To the north you can see the Colmberg, everything around Leipzig and part of Halle. Directly to the west, the view is not so far, as the further course of the Granulite Mountains is in the way. Unfortunately, the Eastern Ore Mountains cannot be seen, as the high altitudes around Sayda block the view. Highly recommended all around, especially if the visibility is good.

The Totenstein mountain is not far from Chemnitz and therefore not too far from the Ore Mountains. At 483 meters high, it is one of the highest mountains in the Ore Mountains foothills.

As early as 1886, the Limbach and Rabenstein Ore Mountains branch associations used the Totenstein hill for tourism and built an observation tower. Even then, it was called the Maria Josefa Tower and, thanks to its 22 meters high, you had a good view of the surrounding area. At the foot of the tower, there were restaurants, at least in summer, which is why the Totenstein quickly became a popular tourist destination.

The original tower had to be demolished in 1953 because it had simply become too dilapidated. It was not until 1998 that a new steel observation tower was built. At 30 meters high, it rises a little higher into the sky than its predecessor. Climbing the tower is free and you can see far into the Ore Mountains and its foothills.
