The settlement in the Baruth glacial valley is of Wendish origin and initially only consisted of the circular eastern part. In 1317 the place was first mentioned as "ville (village) Dummede (smoke)". Western settlement came later. The village initially belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg and from 1680 to the Electorate of Brandenburg. After the enfeoffment of the Knight of Katheritz, Dümde came into the hands of the Zinna Monastery from 1317 to 1553 and then belonged to the Zinna Office. The place was of particular importance around 1407 as a border fortress. In 1642 Dümde said: "This village is desolate and burned down."

The church is a small half-timbered building with a three-sided east end, which was built in 1793. There is a slated roof tower above the western wall, which was replaced with solid brick at the end of the 19th century. The equipment is still from the construction period.

Between 1915 and 1919, the German Research Institute for Aviation carried out aerodynamic tests on the tracks of the Royal Prussian Military Railway (K.M.E.). In these tests, a propeller-driven rapid transit vehicle was used for the first time, which reached speeds of 130 - 150 km/h. This car was the direct forerunner of the also propeller-driven rail zeppelin, which set a world speed record of 230 km/h in 1931. This surpassed the world speed record of 210.2 km/h set 28 years earlier by the AEG three-phase express railcar, also on the tracks of the K.M.E.
