Joseph Meens founded the Meens Brewery in Thull bei Schinnen in 1870, which was operated together with a farm. The brewing of beer and the sale of spent grains, together with agriculture, provided higher yields. Although the brewing of bottom-fermented "Bavarian" beer became popular at the time of its founding, Meens first produced top-fermented beer. It was not until the turn of the century that the company switched to bottom-fermented beer production. Until 1960, Alfa beer was only available in the vicinity of the production site. With the growing prosperity, the beer became available all over the Netherlands.

Alfa Brewery is a family-owned brewery in Schinnen, South Limburg. It has existed since 1870 and is the only one in the Netherlands that uses water from its own underground spring for brewing. She has been purveyor to the Dutch court since 1995.
