Touted as "the world's only drive-in volcano," Sulfur Springs is a magical, muddy geothermal spring near the small Caribbean town of Soufriere. The town's name means 'sulphur mine', a product of French colonists who mined the mineral at a site near Soufriere in the early 1800s.
The sulfur springs are located in a volcanic valley. They were formed about 300,000 years ago when part of the crust of a huge crater collapsed, churning up the lava below. The change in landscape eventually led to the emergence of the hot springs. But since a minor eruption in 1776, the volcano that heats the springs has been dormant. The last major eruption took place about 40,000 years ago.
