Originally, there was a medieval Gothic Long Street Gate on this site. It was demolished and replaced by the current gate, which was intended to have a representative rather than a defensive function. The Golden Gate was completed in 1612 according to a design by the architect Abraham van den Blocke. The building is in the Mannerist style with references to classical architecture - the shape of the gates resembles a triumphal arch, columns in Ionic and composite order. The mansion of the Brotherhood of St. George borders the gate from the north.
