A former railway line of the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft, which ran from Bochum-Langendreer to Dortmund-Löttringhausen, was popularly referred to as the Rheinischer Esel. Workers drove it to their workplaces, coal was transported from the mines to the buyers and market women are said to have brought their goods to the market with this train (as donkeys).

The line connected the routes from Dortmund via Hagen to Bergische, also built by the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft, with the route from Dortmund via Bochum to the Rhineland. This diagonal connection was completed in 1880 and shut down step by step between 1979 and 2004.

When the track was closed, the tracks and other rail traffic facilities were removed from the route. In place of the railway line, a cycling and hiking path was created, which kept the name of the former railway line "Rheinischer Esel".
