Around 1500 a silver ciborium (host holder) was stolen from the church, containing three more consecrated hosts. While fleeing, the thief threw the hosts into a well near Solwerd, after which the water became healing. A chapel was built above the well, near the church of Solwerd. The healing water attracted a lot of interest, but after the Reformation the attention cooled. In 1682 the well was filled in by order of the preacher. The chapel was also demolished around 1780. The current church was built on this spot in 1783. It is a rectangular hall church with a monumental south facade, a brick Classicist pilaster facade with a wooden entablature and a pediment. The church has a hipped roof and instead of a tower an open wooden belfry. The bell in it was cast in 1949 by Van Bergen in Heiligerlee. An open wooden bell chair is a rare sight in the province of Groningen.
