With its estimated three centuries of age, the oak tree that stands here has experienced a lot - and survived. When you consider that all the firewood was once cut down to produce charcoal, it is quite unusual to come across such an old specimen.

Imperial Knight Johan von Harff had the seedling planted as part of a row of oak trees. It marked the border of the pastureland along the mill ditch and protected it from cattle grazing. Protected by this tree line, the water flowed undisturbed from the higher Patersweiher pond over other reservoirs to the Berescheid mill, which turned its mill wheel from 1670 onwards.
