Tin and tungsten were mined here in the 18th century, and from 1950 - against a ban on the Allies - the mining of uranium began under the code name "tin ore investigation company", which was then discontinued in 1957. The tunnels extend to a depth of 280 meters and have a total length of approx. 4 km.

Outside there are some information boards about the Werra tin ore mine. The pit was renovated with EU funds and since 2016 guided tours for visitor groups have been carried out from Mail to September, upon prior notification. The mine is closed from October to April and offers many domestic bat species an excellent and safe place to stay.

We offer you some additional information about the historical tin mining and the route. However, the offer is currently not complete. We ask for your understanding.

The route has a total length of around 7 kilometers. There are no major climbs to tackle. The path usually runs on gravel forest roads, in urban areas on asphalt.

The city of Weißenstadt, the GEOPARK Bavaria-Bohemia and the local group Weißenstadt of the Fichtelgebirge Association wish you an eventful and informative hike! "

The first mine was created here as early as 1734. It went only a few 10 meters into the mountain in search of tin. In the 1920s and during World War II, the mine was expanded to a total distance of around 500 meters. From 1950 to 1957 it was run as the "Werra tin ore investigation company", even though uranium was actually searched for here under the seal of secrecy. By the time it was closed in 1957, the route had a total length of 3.5 kilometers on six levels. The deepest level is 240 meters below the day tunnel. A 3D pit plan at the entrance to the mine (the mouth hole) impressively shows its structure. On the forecourt, several display boards provide information about the history of the mine, its inhabitants (the bats) and uranium mining in the Geopark area between 1945 and 1990.
