하이킹
Paardeweide (85 ha) is one of the controlled flood areas (GOG) of the Sigmaplan. Approximately once a year, during a north-westerly storm, the area is flooded. The rest of the year you can enjoy wet Scheldt nature here. From the dike you have a good view of the reed atoll or via a path through Paardeweide you can take a look at the fish ladder. In Paardebroek (22 ha) you can enjoy the floral splendor especially in the spring.

The Scheldt has always been a defining feature of Berlare.
Ten thousand years ago, the river flowed around the sand dunes of Bareldonk. Time and again, the Scheldt slowly changed its course. After thousands of years, the old Scheldt arm was filled with peat.
At the end of the 17th century, peat was dug and the peat thus extracted was sold. These large-scale extractions would continue until well into the 19th century. The current lakes remain as silent witnesses.
