The parish church of St. Peter and Paul in the Neustift district of the district town of Freising in Bavaria is the former monastery church of the Premonstratensian monastery of Neustift, which was secularized in 1803 and whose church became a parish church. It is considered one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in Bavaria and is a protected building in the list of Freising monuments.

In 1142, Bishop Otto the Great founded a "New Monastery" on the Moosach, half an hour's walk from his cathedral city of Freising. Here were already the graves of the 8th century Irish wandering monks Declanus and Marinus, who were revered as saints, a chapel of St. Alexius with a hospital and a chapel of St. Gotthard.

The Cistercian Otto, however, chose Premonstratensians from the Swabian Ursberg for his Neustift. The swampy place did not meet the Cistercians' clearing mandate, but it was reminiscent of Prémontré, the mother monastery of the Canons of St. Norbert. They were also involved in caring for pilgrims, the poor and the sick - the tasks that Bishop Otto had intended for its foundation. This is probably why a women's convent was part of Neustift until the 13th century.

The monastery church of Peter and Paul was consecrated as early as 1143 and the monastery was confirmed by the Pope. Only the provost's office itself was exempt from episcopal intervention. From the 14th century onwards, the tasks shifted from social welfare to pastoral care. The Canons now looked after numerous parishes in the surrounding area. Neustift was not elevated to an abbey until 1717.

Donations from the local nobility led to the creation of a manor around the monastery. This manor had only 59 properties around 1800. Its inhabitants belonged to the Freising parish of St. George. Neustift did not have a parish church of its own.

The prelate of Neustift was a subject of the Duke of Bavaria-Landshut until the unification of the country in 1505. The city of Freising, in which Neustift had owned eleven houses since the Middle Ages, was considered foreign until the secularization of the diocese (1802). The monastery's upkeep was secured by several independently operated estates, a brewery, a brickworks, the taxes and services of the subjects and the income from the parishes.

Neustift Monastery is a former Premonstratensian abbey in Freising in Bavaria in the Diocese of Freising. The monastery is located in the district of the same name, Neustift.

It was founded in 1142 by Bishop Otto I of Freising with the support of the Margraves of Austria. Initially a provostship, the monastery was elevated to an abbey in 1717. The monastery area was a Hofmark and had lower jurisdiction. As an exclave - it was almost completely surrounded by the area of the Bishopric of Freising - it was not subject to the Prince-Bishop of Freising, but belonged to the Duchy/Electorate of Bavaria.

The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization after the last abbot Kastulus Wohlmuth died in August 1802 and no new one could be elected. The buildings served as barracks from 1803 to 1905. From 1906 to 1971 it housed a cloth factory as well as apartments and offices.

Since 1987 it has been the seat of the Freising district administration office. The three-story building complex is located south of the church and was built at the end of the 17th century. To the southeast of it is the free-standing former monastery library (with preserved coffered ceiling from 1623), and to the east of the monastery building is the "monastery garden" (park). The former banquet hall of the monastery is now the district council meeting room. To the west of the monastery are the former farm buildings, now part of the district administration office.

The monastery church became a branch church of St. George in Freising after 1803, and since 1892 it has been a separate parish church of St. Peter and Paul. It is one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in Bavaria and was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Antonio Viscardi around 1700. It was renovated after a fire in 1751. Ceiling painting created in 1756 by Johann Baptist Zimmermann, the figures by Ignaz Günther, stucco by Franz Xaver Feichtmayr the Younger. The church was reopened on July 3, 2016 after extensive renovations since 2009.

The 65-meter-high church tower is one of the landmarks of the university town of Freising, along with the towers of the Mariendom Cathedral, the baroque tower of St. George and the water towers of the Weihenstephan State Brewery.
