Did you know that the Netherlands has only 7 cathedrals? One of these is located in Den Bosch: St. John's Cathedral. This imposing church was built between 1350 and 1530 and towers over the city. The enthusiastic guides of DagjeDenBosch.com will show you the outside and the inside and tell you fascinating stories about the history of the cathedral. The highlight of a day in Den Bosch!
The Gothic church with its Romanesque tower also has many secrets on the outside. The guide will point out special fragments, such as all those angel statues, finials and pinnacles.
The Sweet Mother in St. John's
The Sunday name of St. John is "Cathedral Basilica St. John Evangelist". Saint John was given the honorary title "Basilica" by the Pope because of the presence of the Sweet Mother, the statue of the Virgin Mary at the back of the church. Many miracles are attributed to this statue and it still attracts many visitors every year. Special about St. John are the many flying buttresses on the outside of the church with images of people, animals and even monsters. That rich decoration is absolutely unique!
The History of Saint John
St. John has endured a lot in all those centuries: wars, lightning strikes, fire in the tower and (not so long ago) peeing men who, after a few beers, discharged their water against the sanctuary. Fortunately, the church survived it all and you can now enjoy all the splendor the cathedral has to offer its visitors. Our guide will show you the baptismal font, the turned canopy, the organ and a number of special tombstones and can tell you all about the history of St. John. You finally find out why the tower has a different color than the church ...
