The castle of Leiden is one of the oldest extant examples of a castle in the Netherlands. The building is located in the center of Leiden, where the two arms of the Rhine converge. The round structure is located on a motte, an artificial mound, and can be entered through a sandstone gate.
When you have walked the many steps, a beautiful view of the city awaits you.

"The Burcht of Leiden is a twenty meter high fortress in the center of the city. The construction of the hill was probably begun as early as the 9th century, by dumping plagues and loam. The fort consists of 6-meter-high walls and numerous loopholes. From the Burcht one had an optimal view over the city, and as soon as danger threatened one could report this and prepare the defense.
