If you stand next to the 22-meter-high Belfort, you are on historical ground. More than 75 years ago, soldiers fought for the freedom of the entire Netherlands on this swampy ground. This can still be clearly seen from the six bunkers next to the tower, also known as casemates, which are part of the Peelraamstelling. A path leads from the tower, which not only formed the escape route from Meijel to Brabant, but was also essential for peat extraction in the Peel.
