St. George's Chapel, Georgenberg, Berschis

The St. George's Chapel, located between Zurich and Chur, is probably already well known to most people, as many have already driven past it on the motorway. However, the St. George's Chapel is a really worthwhile destination for a trip for many reasons! Architecturally, it is the oldest surviving Romanesque church in eastern Switzerland. The first written mention probably dates back to 1253. Facing southeast, it has a two-aisled vaulted structure, which is unique in Switzerland. In the 17th century, the St. George's Chapel was extended with an annex. However, the changes made were partially reversed during a renovation in 1900. The oldest surviving part of the St. George's Chapel is the apse (the vault that protrudes in the structure) together with the two-aisled hall. Both were probably built in the 1st millennium AD.
