In the Hohenstein district of Bönnigheim, below the castle, lies the small village church.

Directly to the east of the church are a few graves of the Barons and Baronesses von Schütz-Pflummern. Hohenstein Castle also belonged to this local nobility from 1740 (with interruptions). The noble family has been extinct since the beginning of the 20th century.

The noblemen served as chamberlains or in various roles in the Württemberg army.

The church was probably built in the late 13th century as a chapel for the castle that stood on the site of the present castle. At least the choir tower dates from this period.

The choir tower was expanded to include a new nave no later than 1601.

At the end of the 19th century, the church had to be extensively restored because the dampness of the slope had caused damage to the north side of the church. This also included the construction of the neo-Gothic extension on the west side of the church. This is how it acquired its current "two-part" appearance.
