The city of Cologne was surrounded by a double fortress ring under Prussian administration. Due to the Versailles Treaty, this had to be dragged. The various forts along the military ring are the remains and are used differently today.

As early as 1816, the Prussians began to build the inner ring of fortifications along what is now known as the Inner Canal Road. Because the range of the guns improved and the suburbs grew due to industrialization, the outer fortress ring with twelve forts, 24 intermediate forts and a maximum radius of 7.7 kilometers was built around the cathedral from 1871.
