The Ilvericher Altrheinschlinge is one of the region's important nature reserves. The area was created around 7,000 years ago as part of the river bed of the Rhine and its formerly large current loop.

In the catchment area of the old arm of the Rhine, a rich flora and fauna has been preserved, such as B. Alder, ash and softwood alluvial forests as well as alder break forests. There are also cultural biotopes that have developed over several centuries, such as wet and humid grassland with pollarded willows. Many threatened animal species, such as the crested newt, have found a habitat in this varied landscape. In addition, the area is an important breeding, feeding and resting biotope for numerous bird species, many of which are protected. In addition to natural and oxbow lakes with rare small fish species, there are also some springs in the area of the Ilverich Altreinschlinge that are extremely rare on the Lower Rhine.

It is no coincidence that the eleven kilometer long Meerbuscher Rhine front between Büderich in the south and Nierst in the north is one of the most beautiful stretches of bank on the Lower Rhine. The wetlands in the direct former river course are particularly in need of protection. Together with the agriculturally used areas, they form a harmonious unit.
