The habitat, Steinbruch-Schassewitt is an abandoned quarry. Until the 1990s, andesite was mined here mainly for road construction. When humans returned the mining area to nature, animals and plants reclaimed the habitat. A natural succession set in. The small lake with near-natural banks and the steep rock faces have become ecological niches in an intensively used cultural landscape. Rocks and still waters are rather rare in our region and enrich the local natural space. Hill debris and old spoil heaps also provide living space for specialists. Due to their small-scale and microclimate diversity, post-mining landscapes, which are often threatened by backfilling with rubble, make an important contribution to species protection. Before the quarry was taken over by the Blum company in 1959, Franziskus Josef Müller, born in Freisen in 1908, was the owner.
