    By advancing to the very bottom of the circus, you can stand under the great waterfall of Gavarnie, 422 meters high.
    The many waterfalls of the circus are notably fed by the glaciers which rest under the ridge line: glaciers of the Brèche, the Helmet, the Shoulder, the Cascade, or the western glacier called the Marboré.

              The Cirque de Gavarnie is a rocky cirque in the Pyrenees National Park. It is considered an impressive natural experience. It is right on the border with Spain and in the municipality of Gavarnie. The basin has a diameter of about two kilometers and is about 1700 meters above sea level. The mountains surrounding it rise more than 1500 meters above the bottom of the basin. In the valley of the almost vertical rock face are the Gavarnie Falls, which are among the highest waterfalls in Europe (total height of fall 422 m). They spring from an underground glacial lake in the mountains and form one of the most important source streams of the Gave de Pau due to the volume of water.

              In 1997, the Cirque de Gavarnie with the entire Pyrénées-Mont Perdu mountain range was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The name comes from Gascon and is derived from the term Gave (see French Wikipedia).

                          The waterfalls are really great and fascinating. You have a height of fall of approx. 420 meters. In order to get to the waterfalls, sturdy shoes (hiking boots) are recommended, as there is a lot of small scree and you can quickly slip here on ascent and descent. If you are not sure-footed, you should have hiking sticks with you.
