Porta Udine was built in 1605 along with Porta Cividale in the northwestern part of the polygonal city of Palmanova. The door still retains the large wheels that were used to raise the drawbridge. Between the two small obelisks on the outer facade was the Marciano lion. Inside there were rooms for officers and soldiers on guard.

On the external façade the lion of St. Mark was resting on the base between the two small obelisks. Inside there are fireplaces and rooms for the officers and soldiers assigned to the guard and for the Contestabile alla Sanità.
