    This Hildesheim church was consecrated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) have the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

          The Michaeliskirche (also St. Michaeliskirche or St. Michaelis) in Hildesheim is an Ottonian, i.e. pre-Romanesque or, according to Kubach, early Romanesque church. Until the Reformation, it was the abbey church of the Benedictine abbey of the same name. Today it is an Evangelical Lutheran parish church. The Bernwards crypt belongs to the inner city Catholic parish and is used for weekday masses. Since 1985, the church, together with Hildesheim Cathedral, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Dom und Michaeliskirche in Hildesheim. On January 2, 2010 a jubilee stamp (EUR 2.20) with the motif of St. Michael was issued. A German 2-euro commemorative coin has been in circulation since February 7, 2014, the reverse of which shows the church.

              For me the most beautiful church in Hildesheim, because of the painted wooden ceiling and because of the dual use as both a Protestant and a Catholic church. Almost completely destroyed in the war, the Michaeliskirche was rebuilt in a simple and impressive way. Luckily, the wooden ceiling was outsourced to a mine and thus preserved.

                      One of the highlights of Hildesheim's sights is St. Michael's Church, which has been consecrated for 1,000 years, and stands close to the historic city center. Together with St. Mary's Cathedral, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Its slightly elevated position, thick towers and walls give the former Benedictine monastery a fortress-like feel - mighty on the outside, harmonious on the inside.
                      The three-aisled basilica is one of the most important preserved churches in the Ottonian, i.e. pre- or early Romanesque, architectural style. You will feel the special atmosphere of this holy gem. Don't forget to look up in the church - a key focus is on the monumental ceiling painting from the 13th century in the central nave of the church: Christ's family tree is depicted on 1,300 oak boards.
