Here in Hechtel-Eksel the Zwarte beek rises in a low-lying meadow area. As with most Kempen streams there is no real source to be found, but rather a confluence of a number of ditches. Another source branch supplies water from Helchteren. Nearby the Bolissenbeek also originates, but it does not drain the water to the Scheldt basin but to the Maas. So we are in a source area.

The common snipe is a pronounced inhabitant of peaty meadows and marshes. With its long beak it searches the ground for insects and other animals. In Flanders only about thirty pairs still breed, of which more than half in the Valley of the Zwarte Beek. In addition to the common snipe, the purple crake and water rail are also rare marsh birds that lead a hidden way of life.
