    The Commandery of Gruitrode is an important cultural-historical heritage in Gruitrode, in the municipality of Oudsbergen. Until 1801, the commandery was one of the twelve commanderies within the Biesen bailiff of the Teutonic Order and was therefore subordinate to the grand commander in Alden Biesen. The commandery consisted of a castle separated by a moat and a square farm.

            The Commandery of Gruitrode is a moated castle from the 15th century. The Loon family built a castle here as early as 1000 to 1366.

            The name "Commandery" comes from the former residents of the castle: the Commander of the Teutonic Order. They ruled Gruitrode from 1416 until the end of the 18th century. The Komtur was an official title of the ecclesiastical order of knights. He directed and administered the branch of the order, the so-called Kommende, and was thus the governor of the Grand Master.

            In 1416 Iwan van Cortenbach, the Commander of the Teutonic Order, bought the property. It became part of the twelve commanderies that were grouped around the main commandery in Alden Biesen. The property remained in the possession of the Teutonic Knights until the Napoleonic period. After 1815 it went into private ownership.

            The Van Megchelen family finally bought the castle in 2003. Nine years later, they gave it to the municipality of Meeuwen-Gruitrode, today's Oudsbergen, in a long-term lease for 99 years. Today the castle is practically the gateway to the Duinengordel nature reserve.

It will be an experience-packed heritage site with attention to the German Order of Knighthood. Commandery Gruitrode will become the gateway to the Dune Belt of the Hoge Kempen National Park. At the same time, the Commanderij will become a meaningful and accessible place for the residents of Oudsbergen, for culture and events and with quality catering. These facilities make the site attractive for companies and organizations looking for a unique meeting or event location in green surroundings. The Commandery consists of two islands, each with its own character, but together they form Commandery Gruitrode. To preserve the image of one entity from the outside, a connection will be created between the farm and the castle, and the entire site will again be surrounded by a moat. The heritage is being restored and new interventions will take place that evoke the lost heritage. All new additions are made in a new architectural language, which fits perfectly with the historic environment.
