Main gate into the historic walled lower city on the strategic peninsula; from here everything happens on foot. No cars or motorized vehicles can enter, and even bikes are not convenient on the many stairs.

A must see if you are in Peloponnese! Historical Greek fortified city, also called "the Gibraltar of the East" because it resembles the real Gibraltar. Monemvasia is located on a high rocky peninsula that is connected to the mainland via a narrow strip and a bridge.

You can walk to the right to the historic center via the asphalt road, but this walk is 'left' where you have to follow the red dots. NB! The end is pure rock scrambling; look after!!

The city was conquered by the rebellious Greeks in the war of liberation in 1821. However, it did not manage to recover, on the contrary, it sank almost completely into insignificance and became a dying village, which in 1971 had only 32 inhabitants. On the bank opposite the rock arose a modern village called Gefira ("bridge"), in contrast to the ancient city called Kastro ("castle", cf. Kastron). After 1980, the old city began to be rebuilt, which has now become a popular weekend retreat for wealthy Athenians. Today, the medieval buildings are gradually being restored; many of them have been converted into hotels.
