The Sint Martinusgasthuis is a small courtyard and former guesthouse in the city of Groningen, which has been designated a municipal monument. The guesthouse is located in the Grote Leliestraat in the Hortusbuurt, the street with the most courtyards and guesthouses in the city of Groningen.
In 1869 the building application for the first houses of the Sint Martinusgasthuis was submitted by the Roman Catholic institution of charity Love to God and our Neighbors. The construction of the hospital started and around 1880 the first Roman Catholic, somewhat older residents were able to move into a cottage in the hospital. These so-called conventuals had to behave decently; disturbance, immoral behavior, etc. was out of the question.
It was not until 1892 that the hospital gets its current symmetrical shape with the construction of a number of houses on the street side.
In the 60s of the twentieth century, conventuals became less and less interested in the houses and they were gradually replaced by 'normal' tenants of different ages. In 1987 the guest house was sold to the housing association Concordia (current name: De Huismeesters), which thoroughly renovated the guest house and merged several houses. Currently the Sint Martinusgasthuis is inhabited mainly by people in their thirties and forties.
