          The Broek was an almost inaccessible area because the Rupel was regularly flooded. The landscape changed dramatically during the dike of the river between 1100 and 1300. After the dike, the peat was mined as fuel. This created the ponds that are so characteristic of the area.

            After the embankment of the Rupel between 1100 and 1300, the valley of the Rupel could be cultivated. In the late Middle Ages, most of the Broek was used as a flow meadow; other parts for clay extraction and housing construction. The current ponds, including the so-called Putten van Lacourt and the Vekeputten, are traces of peat extraction on a relatively large scale during this period.
