This well was built in 1551 by order of Maximilian of Burgundy. He had promised Scottish wool merchants in Veere that he would provide drinking water and water for rinsing wool.

The water from the roof of the Grote Kerk (Great Church) is collected and filtered here. Its capacity is 200 m³.

The radiating vault rests on the open sides of the octagon with Tudor arches on slender columns.

Cistern built in 1551 next to the Great Church in Veere.

Cistern, Oudestraat. Large water reservoir for 2000 hl of water. This water came from the roof of the Grote Kerk and was piped into the cistern via lead pipes laid under the street. In order to obtain the staple right for wool, Maximilian of Burgundy had this well dug in 1542, thus guaranteeing Scottish wool merchants access to fresh water at all times. The octagonal building surrounding the well was built in 1551 according to a design by Adriaan Roman and is one of the few Tudor-style buildings still preserved in the Netherlands.
