            Bückelte was first mentioned around 850 under the name "boclithi." Under the same name, Bückelte was counted in the 10th century among the villages that belonged to the Bokeloh parish at that time. "Boclithi" means "beech-covered slope" (according to Hermann Abels).

            The hardships of the seven-kilometer-long church path through the impassable Hase lowlands forced the Bückelte residents to build their own local chapel in 1505. According to legend, they used the rubble of a destroyed St. John's settlement in Klosterholte as building material. The unadulterated late Gothic structure of the almost 500-year-old church and the choir frescoes from its time of construction, which were uncovered during a renovation in 1963, make the Bückelte Chapel a well-known, frequently visited architectural monument in the Emsland region.

            In its interior and surroundings, the venerable building embodies an ancient, established unity of ecclesiastical and secular life.
