The Uspenski Cathedral is one of the most important sights in Helsinki. The building is so impressive because it stands freely on rocks, clearly visible from all sides, on the edge of the harbor. The Orthodox church was designed by Alexei Gornostajew and consecrated in 1868.
The interior of the church is very magnificent and brilliantly decorated. The naves rest on massive granite columns and are lined with brightly colored mosaics and particularly beautiful icons.

A visit is highly recommended.

The exact opposite of the cathedral is the Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral. With its onion domes, you would expect the church to be in Russia rather than Helsinki.

In fact, the Uspenski Cathedral was also designed by a Russian architect and is the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe. Entry is free here too.

The Uspenskin katedraali is clearly visible from afar. It towers over the city on the Katajanokka peninsula, and in good weather its thirteen golden domes can be seen from many points in the Finnish capital.
The thirteen onion domes, which sparkle with the sun on fine days, were chosen carefully. They symbolize the 12 apostles and Jesus. The building itself is made of red brick.
The entire construction took almost 60 years and the cathedral was only consecrated in 1868.
