As a preliminary work, the Altenrode manor belonged to Heiningen Monastery; since 1306 it was completely in their possession. The manor wall, which was built from the remains of Gielde Castle and possibly also the Kaiserpfalz Werla, probably dates from the same year. The farm has existed since the Middle Ages and has belonged to the Wätjen family for six generations. The former sheepfold from 1872 is now an event hall.

The so-called Altenrode Manor was a farm belonging to the Heiningen Monastery since the 14th century. Located in Altenrode near Gielde in the municipality of Schladen-Werla, the estate is now run as an agricultural holding together with two neighboring farms in a partnership (GbR).

The Altenrode settlement emerged as a result of a series of clearings initiated in Carolingian times, starting from Gielde, as part of a process of internal colonization of the Oderwald. Heiningen Monastery gradually acquired possessions of the settlement over the course of the Middle Ages, so that by 1321 the entire village lay within the monastery's boundaries and served as its farm. The oldest surviving part of the settlement, a roughly 600-meter-long wall made of sandstone blocks, probably dates from this period.
