Glurnser Lauben, Glurns

The Glurnser Laubengasse

In honor of the Bartholomäusmarkt, which was held in Glurns from 1294, Duke Meinhard II had the street that later became Laubengasse paved and arcades erected on the sides of the new Marktgasse. Craftsmen and traders in particular settled in the arcades, which were protected from the sun, wind and rain, as they could safely produce and display their goods here.

A few centuries later, farmers used the medieval arcades as stables. Although some cows were housed here up until the 1980s, the arcades have since been renovated as a monument as part of the renovation work in Glurns.

With their small shops and handicraft shops, the arcades not only invite you to stroll, but are also one of the landmarks of Glurns.

Laubengasse – Former transshipment point and Marktgasse

In 1291, Duke Meinhard II, Count of Tyrol, established the Bartholomäusmarkt in Glorenza on August 24th. The market lasted ten days and was considered to compete with the annual market held around the birth of Mariae (September 8) in the nearby prince-bishop-Churian market town of Müstair. He also had the street secured with a fortification wall and two city gates that no longer exist at the upper and lower ends of the street. Remains of the former city wall can be seen in Pankratiusgasse opposite the Stadtmühle.

Among other things, salt from the Inn Valley, wine from the Valtellina, sheep and grain were traded. The workshops of the craftsmen were set up in the arcades. They offered their goods for sale under the arcades in front of them.
