Between Riegel and Köndringen, the renatured Elz can be experienced very nicely on a bike tour on the dams on both sides of the river. As a compensatory measure for the expansion of the Rhine Valley Railway, the Elz between Köndringen and Riegel was revitalized. By relocating the embankment on the left, the Elz was given much more space and a winding course instead of the originally straightened and narrowed course of the river. This resulted in different flow speeds, water depths and flow conditions and constantly changing gravel and gravel surfaces. All of this now offers new habitats for many different animal and plant species. At the same time, flood protection improved.
It is a leisurely tour on the side embankments, where strollers, hikers and runners often go. Not really for racing drivers!
The renatured areas should not be entered. So binoculars could be worth it! Cattle are now grazing on the land.
At Riegel, the Elz flows into the Dreisam Canal in front of the impressive backdrop of the Michaelsberg and the former brewery. Five rivers or watercourses meet here.
A nice spot!
