The place Peenemünde as well as the entire Peenemünde hook had to suffer again and again under devastating storm surges, since parts of the area were at a level of 1m below sea level. From the port of Karlshagen to the northern tip of the island of Usedom, a dyke was built in 1939 as part of the construction of the Peenemünde experimental institutes. This dyke had a length of about 4km, a height of up to 4m and was about 3m wide at the top. In the course of dike construction, the Cämmerer Lake was separated from the Peene. In order to further increase the flood protection at the airport site and in the local area of Peenemünde, sand from the Peene and the Bodden was washed up on the planned construction areas and the airport areas, thus raising the ground level by about 2 m. The dyke formed at the same time the boundary of the test area on the Peene. Today it is one of the few elements of the Army Research Institute, which is still preserved in the original sense and continues to fulfill its original function.

The way is currently (August 2018) not recommended as a bike path, a lot of coarse gravel so that you only slowly progress with trekking bikes. The path is also used as a construction route for the high-voltage lines.
