It is a scenic highlight. The rocks are worth seeing in terms of size, variety of shapes and color effect. A number of paths can be strolled between the rocks, around the rocks and through crevices in these rocks, and you always discover new places. On the southern ridge there is another viewpoint with a view far into the Northern Vosges.

Was there in November too, there wasn't so much going on and you could watch the natural spectacle in a relaxed manner. The trail is very well signposted. It is fantastic here.

- The rocks are an impressive natural / cultural monument near Eppenbrunn (Rhineland-Palatinate), in the Palatinate Forest, on the French border
- If you do not love a "hike through the peoples", you should choose the "right time" for this exploration, you may / may be heavily frequented during holiday periods or when the weather is great!
- but definitely worth a hike!
- after the rocks - towards the French border - it was clearly "calmer".

The Buntsandstein is the lower of the three lithostratigraphic groups of the Germanic Triassic. It lies on top of the Zechstein group and is overlaid by the shell limestone group.

The name "Buntsandstein" does not refer to a specific type of rock, i.e. no brightly colored sandstone of any age, but a succession of rocks up to several hundred meters thick from the Lower Triassic, which is made up of sandstone, but also siltstone and mudstone and sometimes also limestone and gypsum rock. In the past, the Buntsandstein (as well as shell limestone and Keuper) was also understood as a unit of time or time interval in the history of the earth and equated with the Lower Triassic (or Middle and Upper Triassic). However, the red sandstone sedimentation does not begin at the same time in the entire distribution area (diachrony). This is one of the reasons why "Buntsandstein" is unsuitable as an interval for the international geological time scale. Today's boundary from the Lower to the Middle Triassic, defined by fossils (i.e. biostratigraphically), does not coincide with the Buntsandstein/Muschelkalk boundary, but lies somewhat lower, still within the youngest section of the Buntsandstein. Thus, "Buntsandstein" is today only to be understood as a designation for a rock sequence (i.e. for a unit of lithostratigraphy) of early Triassic age.

The Altschloßfelsen can be very well negotiated as a round, in which one goes one way over the rocks, and the way back under the rocks back. There are various nice rest areas, small "cracks" from one side of the rock formation to another and small cave niches.

The Altschlossfelsen are about one and a half kilometers long rock group made of red sandstone with a height of up to 30 meters. The group consists of sandstone towers and walls. The old castle rocks are criss-crossed by cracks and joints, some of which are wide enough to climb through. They are best known for their diverse weathering phenomena and rare lichens. The summit plateau can be hiked on narrow paths from the north and south. There is a light forest and stones overgrown with moss. Depending on the weather, vegetation and position of the sun, the "rock glow" is best seen in the first half of April at 7:00 p.m. on the southeast side of the third rock from the east (from Eppenbrunn).

The approx. 1.5 km long Preminm path begins here. On which you walk on, between and sometimes even under the rocks. Certainly worth going early in the morning or in the late afternoon because of the light conditions.

The Altschlossfelsen (also called Eppenbrunner Schloss) are a group of rocks made of red sandstone in the Palatinate Forest on the border with France and designated as a natural monument (ND) ND-7340-205 and cultural monument (KD) in the municipality of Eppenbrunn and the largest rock formation in the Palatinate. You are on the east slope of the Brechenberg (406 m) near Eppenbrunn and Roppeviller at an altitude of around 365 m above sea level. NHN at the northeast end and 380 m above sea level. NHN at the southwest end of the rock band.

The Altschlossfelsen are included in the two premium trails "Altschloßpfad" and "Grenzweg". Both are approx. 10 and 11 km long hiking trails that run around the rocks (left and right). An approx. 1.5 km long red sandstone formation with varied color compositions that ensure an extraordinary hiking experience. Easy and problem-free in every respect for familiar hikers ;-)
I recommend Eppenbrunn as a start / finish point, where you can also stop off very easily.

The Altschlosspfad begins and ends here at the Hotel Kupper. The best time to visit is during the evening rock glow in mid-April to early May - provided the sun is shining. Then the play of colors on the rocks is unforgettable.
