According to a legend about the establishment of the chain cross (actually a Kättchenkreuz), the legend tells of the death of a girl called Kätt from Schlausenbach.
This girl had made a bet with some young boys from the village that they would walk in the dark from Schlausenbach to this point where the cross now stands. At that time it was an eerie place with gloomy hedges and bushes on the ridge of the Schneifel. Some of those who had taken part in the bet had run ahead, hiding in the hedges and pulling blankets over their heads.
They wanted to make fun of scaring the girl. But Kätt had become so frightened on her nocturnal walk that she got a shock at the sight of the shapeless figures and dropped dead. (information board)
