Its origin is traditionally attributed to Roman times, linked to the Via XIX, Most of the modern structure are from medieval and modern times. Its Roman origin cannot be ruled out even if it was reformed in later times as several cariological sites were found in the area with military pieces and other Roman artifacts.

In Spain we tend to call any bridge of medieval construction a "Roman bridge", even if it was much later than the Romans. But this time there is no mistake, since in this case it was these who built the original elevation.
The important Via XIX of the Antonino itinerary passed through here (from Bracara to Santiago, to go towards Asturias passing through Lugo).
