Patrician house with street-side lattice, a small courtyard, two single-storey side wings and a two-storey main house at the back.

The buildings were constructed in 1806 in the style of the Aachen builder Couven.

The client was Johann Joseph Spiess from Colmar.

The French tax authorities appointed him in 1798 to collect the indirect taxes and administrate the national domains in the canton of Erkelenz.

The house was badly damaged in World War II.

The city of Erkelenz acquired Haus Spiess on January 17, 1978. Today, among other things, the registry office of the city of Erkelenz is located here

At Franziskanerplatz, named after the convent that was abolished in 1802, behind the tower of the Lamberti Church, which dominates the cityscape of Erkelenz, is the private house of a Napoleonic bailiff. The neat building bears the name of its builder Johann Joseph Spiess. The former officer of the life guard of King Louis XVI. was appointed by Napoleon as domain administrator and rentmaster for Erkelenz and Odenkirchen. Spiess married into the wealthy city celebrities and in 1806 had a house built in keeping with their status for himself and his much younger wife Luise Dreling.

The well-proportioned, three-winged building is contemporary and classicistic with individual late baroque echoes. As a particularly beautiful object, it adapts to the couven style of the region - named after the Aachen architect Johann Josef Couven and his son, who not only created numerous buildings themselves during the construction boom of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but also others Builders influenced the region with their French-inspired architecture.
