    This segment from Cwm Gwdi car park to Pen Y Fan summit is an old military test route. The segment is from the gate at the upper car park to PYF summit. With a full combat load of 55lbs and your rifle the test time used to be 50mins. A practical alternative for hikers is to do it with a 10kg day sack in the same time. It is a real lung buster.

      Start of the Cwm Gwdi route to Pen Y Fan. If you can get to PYF within 50 minutes with a full winter sack then you are a brutal hiker :-)

        Fun way to get up Pen y Fan. The last section is pretty steep.

          Just back from Pen y Fan, did the northern approach from the Cwm Gwdi NT car park. Yes, the last 200-300 metres are pretty steep, and at 83 I had to crawl and scramble in places to keep my balance in the wind. Even so, it took us just under two hours to get to the top. Wonderful descend via Corn Du and the Nant Cwm Llwch valley although the path down to the Llyn Cwm Llwch lake is quite tricky with one-metre deep "steps" in several places. The northern route gave us more thrill and satisfaction than the busy approach from Pont ar Daf. The whole circuit took us about 6 hrs with nice long rests admiring the views.
