The legend of the coat of arms of Stavelot and the abbey:
Legend has it that when the monastery was built, Saint Remaclus was provided with a donkey that served as a pack animal. During one of his trips to the quarry, the donkey was attacked by a wolf that Saint Remaclus had condemned to carry the stones needed to build the temple. Hence the presence of a wolf in the coat of arms of the abbey as well as in the coat of arms of Stavelot. Sculptures depicting a wolf can also be seen on the fountain in the square.

The abbey was founded in 648 by Saint Remaclus, a monk from Limoges. For over a thousand years, the town that grew up around the abbey maintained its independence. At that time, Stavelot-Malmedy Abbey was an important spiritual and political center. Unfortunately, the glorious years passed after the French Revolution, which contributed to the secularization and destruction of the monastery.

After being destroyed during the French Revolution, the abbey was demolished. Today, all that remains of the church is the western entrance in the form of a huge tower. Thanks to the exposed foundations of the abbey church, which dates back to the 11th century, you can admire its dimensions. The remaining buildings date from the 18th century. The surviving stone and brick buildings had a secular character, while the monks' buildings now house a museum.
