The Passionsspielhaus is now a landmark of the municipality of Erl. In its aspiring form, the radiant white house can be seen from afar. The impressive building was built in 1959 according to plans by Robert Schuler. Originally, the house was only intended for the Passion Play, which takes place every six years in summer. To this day, the house cannot be heated and can therefore only be used in summer. In the Passionsspielhaus, up to 1,500 visitors can be seated on gently sloping rows of benches. The atmosphere in the spacious room is extraordinary. The same applies to the acoustics: the Passion Playhouse was designed at a time when artists had to play without amplification. Due to the unusual architecture, the sound is concentrated above the heads of the spectators and reaches every single seat.

Every six years, around 600 amateur actors from the 1450 inhabitants of Erl actively take part in the passion play.
Erl is the oldest Passion Play location in German-speaking countries.
