The gate dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. After the heavy siege by the Flemish in 1304, the defenses were drastically improved. This included the construction of this gate. The name of the builder of this gate is unknown. Unfortunately, this can no longer be understood, because in 1811 the archive documents were sold by the then mayor as waste paper.
Like the Zuidhavenpoort, the Nobelpoort is high. It offered defenders the ability to spy on and harass their attackers from above. It is still the time mainly of bow and arrow. When the cannons were able to develop their destructive effect, gates that high were no longer built.

The Nobelpoort is one of the three remaining city gates of the city of Zierikzee, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The gate is situated inland and dates from the mid-14th century. The origin of the name is unclear. There was originally a drawbridge in front of the gate. Until 1866 the gates were closed every evening.
