In 1954, the cross was erected on the forest path between Wallmenroth and Katzwinkel. The Kolping family of Wallmenroth wanted to give thanks for the fact that the community was largely spared from the war. Since then, an annual mountain procession to the cross has taken place, combined with a Thanksgiving festival.

Originally, there was a simple wooden cross on the meadow. In 1975, the wooden cross was replaced by a concrete cross. The concrete was tiled with white and gray mottled brick slips. A wooden figure of Christ was then added to the cross. The design of this cross was by the Brachbach artist Josef Christ. But the wooden body was destroyed in the 1980s. Another figure of Christ, this time made of steel, was attached to the cross. But this was relatively small and did not fit the size of the cross.

In 2006, the cross was restored again. The body was renewed and a new, 1.25 m tall figure of Christ was attached. The new cross was ceremoniously inaugurated with an ecumenical mountain service and thanks were given to all volunteers and donors.

The cross is a symbol of peace and is intended to convey a sense of connection to history and homeland to the younger generations and encourage tolerance.

People like to linger here on the hill and feel the peace and strength that emanates from this beautiful place and enjoy the view over the mountain meadow, which on clear days stretches from the Wissenerland to the Siebengebirge.
