The station is the terminus of the Nordland line, which was completed in 1961. It is the only railway line in Norway that crosses the Arctic Circle. The Ofotbane to Narvik is further north, but the Malmbana already crosses the Arctic Circle on the Swedish side. The journey time over the entire route is between 9:35 h and 10:30 h.
