The mansion was built from 1743 according to plans by Rudolph Matthias Dallin, it was his last major work before his death.

The castle has been privately owned since 1992 and was sold on condition that it be renovated. The owner initially did not comply with this argument, arguing that the outbuildings do not belong to him. The community of Dassow wanted to force a court that the castle is returned. The outbuildings now also belong to the current owner. In a 2013 comparison, the owner committed himself to renovating the castle in 5 years to make it a listed building. You can see from the photos that something was done on the castle, but how far the renovation of the outbuildings will go is still completely unclear. The community has no influence on them.

The estate was originally owned by the Buchwald family, who had inherited there since the 16th century. Since the marriage of the maid of honor Margarete von Buchwald to Claus Schack, the owners have been using the name Schack von Buchwald. The Gottorfische Conferencerat and Lübeck canon Schack von Buchwald (1705–1770) had today's castle from 1743 as the successor to a medieval moated castle for himself and his wife Eleonore Elisabeth, née. von Plessen. In 1782 the property went to the Eckermann family, who lived here for several generations until 1945. After the landowners were expropriated in the post-war period and under the government of the GDR, the castle was used as a residential building for private purposes ……… ..

As the successor to a medieval moated castle, Johannstorf Castle was built from 1743 not far from Lake Dassow to the north-west of Dassow. The mansion is a two-storey, eleven-axis brick building with a basement and a mansard roof. It has a gabled porch on both sides. The courtyard portal bears the coat of arms of the previous owners of Buchwald.

After 1945 the last owners were expropriated. The castle served as a residential building for private tenants. After 1990 the property was first sold to a private investor. Since 2007, however, the municipality and the buyer have been arguing about reversing the purchase contract.

Almost nothing is left of the former interior. The building ensemble on the square courtyard island is in dire need of renovation and the overgrown gardens require maintenance.

Unfortunately, the castle no longer looks as it does in most pictures. It was severely damaged by fire on March 1, 2025. It, along with its other buildings, is once again a lost place.

It's worth the detour independently, and I recommend coming through the archway and, after a short rest, turning right onto the old "road" to Benckendorf (or driving to the castle from there).

Status (2025): The previous owner failed to fulfill his obligations, and the castle rapidly deteriorated. A fire in March destroyed the building, with police suspecting arson.
